CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The Lee women's lacrosse team dropped their season finale, 11-8, to Alabama Huntsville on Saturday afternoon from the Ray Conn Sports Complex.
Callie Curtis and Maggie Luzier paced the Lady Flame offense with two goals each. Hannah Vecsey, Caleigh Kenna, Brittney White, and Megan Trout all threw in a goal to round out the host scoring.
The Chargers got the scoring started just 38 seconds into the match with a Sarah Cole shot. UAH tacked on two more goals in the first to take a, 3-0, lead after one period.
"In the first period, we were a little frantic and throwing the ball away. Once we finally got things going and running our offensive sets we started scoring," said head coach Derrel Martin about the start for the Lady Flames.
Isadora Springer added one more in the opening minute of the second frame before Vecsey put the Lady Flames on the board with a man-up goal. Maya Bronson added a fifth for the guests, and Lee answered with three straight goals from Trout, Kenna, and Luzier to cut the lead to one with just over four minutes to go in the half.
The second half was a tale of two periods for the Lady Flames. UAH outscored Lee, 4-1, in the third before the hosts outscored the Chargers, 3-1, in the fourth.
Curtis threw in her first goal of the contest with 7:46 left in the third. White then scored the first goal in the fourth to trim the lead to four with 10:36 to go.
Katie Williams took advantage of a man-up opportunity with 9:20 remaining in the game to take an, 11-6 lead for UAH. Curtis found the back of the net from a Kenna pass with 2:50 and Luzier had the final goal of the contest with 49 seconds remaining.
White once again paced all players with six draw controls while Kylee Kangas pitched in with four. Kaleigh Bernard picked up six ground balls and Curtis was credited with five. Kelsey McGowen and Rachel Schuetze each had three caused turnovers.
Bernard faced 19 shots recording eight saves.
Shaina Dozier posted nine saves on 17 shots, allowing eight goals. Chloe Wood and Katie Williams paced the Chargers with three goals each. Sara Pagotto had four ground balls and three draw controls to lead the guests. Riley Kirby recorded three caused turnovers.
Prior to the match, Lee honored six seniors for senior day, Jaylee Giffin, Megan Trout, Kelsey McGowen, Suzanna Perri, Lauren Linares, and Caleigh Smith.
When asked about these seniors Coach Martin had this to say, "This class was the first class that we recruited. We've had four years, and we have loved them, and hate to see them go, but we have one or two more games to go."
Lee will now play in the Gulf South Conference tournament on Friday, April 28, as they take on host and one-seed Flagler University in the semifinals.
