MEMPHIS, Tenn. –The Lee University Lady Flames softball team split a double header with Christian Brothers University on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Flames won game one 8-4 and then saw their three-game win streak snapped in game two with a 12-4 loss. Lee now sits at 13-32 overall and 8-18 in Gulf South Conference play.
Game 1
The first two and a half innings were very quiet as only one hit was accumulated by both teams. In the bottom of the third, Savannah Crockett broke through and hit a solo home run to give CBU the lead. The Lady Flames answered right back in the top of the fourth as Sidney Lee hit a solo home run to tie the game up. It was the tenth home run of the season for Lee which leads the team.
The Lady Flames kept the pressure up in the fourth. The Lady Flames loaded the bases and then Hayden Gardner was walked to score Javaria Smith. It was the first career run batted in for Gardner to give Lee the 2-1 lead. CBU tied the game right back up in the bottom of the fourth using two singles to bring in a run.
Lee took the lead for good in the top of the fifth inning. A single by Smith was mishandled but the Bucs and that allowed Sidney Lee and Alexa Scalzo to score to make it 4-2. The very next batter Laney Harris drove in Smith to make it 5-2.
CBU made it close with a two-run home run from Caroline Gross in the bottom of the fifth. However, 5-4 was a close as CBU would get. Scalzo had a two-run home run in the sixth and Smith had a solo home run in the seventh to make the final score 8-4. For Scalzo it was her sixth home run of the season and for Smith it was her second.
In the win, Smith was 3-for-4 from the plate with three runs scored and two driven in. Scalzo and Lee each had two RBI. Natalie Pruitt earned her sixth win of the season going all seven innings, giving up four runs on eight hits and she struck out eight batters.
Game 2
The Lady Flames had opportunities early in game two getting Scalzo and Lee on base in the first inning but could not capitalize. In the top of the third, freshman Hayden Gardner had her first single which le two RBI's of her career as she drove in Laney Harris and Javaria Smith to give the Lady Flames a 2-0 lead.
The advantage did not stay long though as CBU scored nine runs on six hits and an error in the bottom half of the third inning. The inning was capped off by an Ashlynn Smith three-run home run for the Bucs.
Lee got two runs back in the top of the fifth as Macha reached safely on an error and drove in Smith in the process. Ormsby then singled to score Goodridge and make the deficit 9-4. The Bucs added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth when Riley Simpson hit a three -run home run. The home run ended the game one inning early in the sixth.
Harris was the only Lady Flame to have more than one hit in the second game as she ended with two. Smith had two runs scored and Gardner had two RBI.
The Lady Flames will play the rubber match against CBU on Sunday, April 23 at 12 PM in Memphis, Tenn.
