BIRMINGHAM, Ala.-For the second straight season, Beck Burnette has been named Gulf South Conference Golfer of the Year as announced by the league on Monday. Joining Burnette on the First-Team All-GSC is graduate student Dustin DeMersseman. The Flames are coming off of a third place finish in the GSC championship last week. DeMersseman was the highest finisher for the Flames coming in seventh place. Oliver Lewis-Perkins was named to the Second Team All-GSC. It is the third straight season he has been named to an All-GSC team.
Burnette has been named to three straight First Team All-GSC. He accomplished the feat in 2021, 2022, and 2023. He is one of 12 golfers to earn three All-GSC awards and he is one of three to be first team all three times. The Bryon Nelson Award finalist, had a scoring average of 69.19. He is ranked as the #1 NCAA DII golfer in the country. On four separate occasions, he earned GSC Golfer of the Week and he had four individual tournament wins this season.
Director of Golf John Maupin is extremely proud of Burnette. "Beck has had an incredible season and he deserves this recognition. The numbers are truly remarkable….69.5 scoring average, four wins, finished in the top five in nine out of ten events, school record round of 63. It was a historic season, and I couldn't be more proud of him."
DeMersseman was a second team All-GSC selection in 2021. He has a scoring average of 73.76 this year. He is ranked seventh in the south region and ranked in the top 25 nationally. He finished in the Top 20 in five of six tournaments this spring and had eight rounds under par this semester.
Maupin was excited in what DeMersseman had accomplished this year. "I was so excited to see Dustin chosen as First Team All-GSC. I'm most proud of his resilience, after a tough fall season, he's had an outstanding spring season. Dustin's had a great career for us, but he took it to another level this spring. He's proven himself as one of the best players in the GSC."
For the third straight season, Oliver Lewis-Perkins earned All-GSC honors as he earned second team All-GSC this season. In 2021, he was first team All-GSC and on the All-Tournament team. It was the same in 2022 as he was on the first team All-GSC and tied Burnette for second place at the tournament and made the All-Tournament team. He is one of 12 golfers in conference history to achieve the honor
The Flames will compete in the NCAA South Regional May 11-13 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
