13 Flames Score in Rout of Voorhees College

CLEVELAND, Tenn. –13 different Lee University men's basketball players scored on Tuesday evening as the Flames defeated Voorhees College 87-58. Lee scored 52 points in the second half to pull away and win their 12th contest of the season. In the final non-conference game of the season, the Flames secured 17 offensive rebounds and had 25 second points in the win.

The game started slowly for both teams with the Vorhees Tigers taking an early 4-2 lead after three minutes of action. But after that the Flames started to find some rhythm and had two separate 6-0 runs to lead 35-25 at the halftime break.

The second half produced even more offense for the Flames as several of the young freshman had strong showings. Freshman Jamarcus Wilkins had eight points and seven rebounds while fellow freshman Zach Gray had eight points and eight rebounds. True freshman Tylon Chatman had a career high eight points.

Lee was 34-for-70 from the field and scored 50 of their 87 points in the paint. They held the Tigers to 21-for-52 shooting including 4-for-14 from long range. The Flames outrebounded Voorhees 23-8 in the second half and had 11 more rebounds (39-28) in the whole contest.

Lee will hop back into Gulf South Conference action on Saturday, January 27. The Flames will host the University of Montevallo at 4 PM at Walker Arena.

Coach Bubba Smith's Thoughts:
  • "In the first half at times, we had too many guys hanging around and allowed Voorhees to stay in it. At halftime I told the team if you aren't going to challenge on the glass you aren't going to play. The message got through and we were much better."
  • "JJ Barnes led us defensively. We talk about taking assignments personal and he did just that. He guarded a guy that normally scores 18 a game to just six and he set the tone."
  • "It was good for our guys to have the game today to help keep our edge as we get ready to go back into GSC play."
