Kassen Wins Heptathlon Championship, Third In 60-meter Hurdles

Flames Tie For 12th, Lady Flames Tie For 36th

FINAL RESULTS

PITTSBURG, Kan. – Cale Kassen posted an individual championship and a third-place finish to help the Lee University Men's Track & Field team to tie for 12th out of 49 teams at the 2024 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships held inside the Robert W. Plaster Center on the campus of Pittsburg State. The Lady Flames completed the two days of competition tied for 36th out of 48.

Kassen entered the final day of the Heptathlon trailing Hunter Jones of Pittsburg State by 18 points. He quickly moved into first place by 96 points following the 60-meter Hurdles where he added 1,056 points with a first-place time of 7.71 seconds.

The newfound lead was short-lived. Kassen cleared 4.05 meters in the Pole Vault to add 631 points to run his total to 5,017 with one event remaining. Jones increased his point total to 5,036 with a seventh-place finish of 4.45 meters.

Kassen completed the Heptathlon with a third-place finish in the 1000-meter Run. He posted 784 points with a time of 2:48.25. Jones was sixth (2:51.81) and received 747 points. With the 37-point difference in the event, Kassen overcame the 19-point deficit from the previous six events to claim the Heptathlon Championship. His point total of 5,801 set a new Division II record.

His day was not done with the completion of the Heptathlon. Shortly after he crossed the finish line of the 1000, he was in the final of the 60-meter Hurdles. Kassen stopped the clock at 7.82 seconds to claim second place. Daylin Williams of Pittsburg State was the winner at 7.77.

A day after helping the Lady Flames' Distance Medley Relay team to a fifth-place finish, McKenna Cavanaugh was back on the track for the final of the Women's 3000-meter Run. Cavanaugh crossed the finish line at 9:38.24 for 16th place.
