HICKORY, N.C. – Dayveun Anderson hit a game-winning layup with 1.3 seconds left on the clock to give the Lee University men's basketball team an 83-81 victory over Wingate University on Friday evening. After trailing by as many as 14 points with seven minutes left in the game, Wingate battled back to tie it with 13 seconds left before Anderson the go-ahead layup. Wingate could not get a shot off at the end of the contest and the Flames moved to 2-0 on the year.
It was a career night for Ben Richter who had 20 points. Anderson added 17 points while Tylon Chatman had 14 and Zach Gray had 13. The Flames shot almost 53% from the floor in the win and outrebounded and had more assists than Wingate.
Lee moved 2-0 on the year while Wingate fell to 2-1. While there were four ties, the Flames never trailed in the win over the Bulldogs. Wingate kept the game close with free throws. They were 8-for-8 in the first half and 16-for-18 in the second half. Lee also shot the ball well from the free throw line as they were 17-for-21.
The Flames will stay in North Carolina and take on Lenoir-Rhyne University on Saturday at 4 PM.
Coach Bubba Smith's Thoughts:
"Proud of the guys tonight in finding a way to win a close one. I thought we had moments in both halves tonight where we did some good things on both sides of the ball. We just couldn't find enough consistency to put them away tonight. I think we will have to learn how to win close games this year. I thought we had different guys step up in different stretches, which was good to see. Quick turnaround and a really good Lenoir Rhyne team we will face tomorrow."
