Lady Flames Take A Split With Union on Friday

CLEVELAND, Tenn. –The Lee University softball team split a Gulf South Conference doubleheader with Union University on Friday afternoon. Lee won the first game with a shutout 3-0 and then loss game two 2-5. The two teams will go for the rubber match at 2 PM at Butler Field on Saturday.
 
Game 1
 
Natalie Pruitt-Geesey dominated the game for Lee as she threw seven scoreless innings. She threw 72 total pitches and gave up only five hits while striking out four.
 
The Lady Flames got a couple of runner s on base in the first and second innings, but could not find a way to score. Finally in the fourth, Lee broke through the drought. Alexa Scazlo smashed a solo home run to open the fourth. Javaria Smith then singled and after an error, Ava Perkins brought her home with a single.
 
The final run of the game for Lee came in the bottom of the fifth when Scazlo doubled to score Ana Macha.
 
Scalzo and Macha each had two hits to lead the team while Perkins and Scalzo had the RBI. Pruitt-Geesey earned her ninth win of the season. She is tied for the GSC lead in wins.
 
Game 2
 
The game did not start well for the Lady Flames as Union took the lead in the top of the first. The Lady Bulldogs started with back-to-back singles and then a double steal to plate the first run. The second run of the frame came on a sacrifice fly and Union led 2-0.
 
Lee for a run back on a solo home run from Rylie Goodridge in the bottom of the second. The bottom of the third brought the tying run in for the Lady Flames. Kaelin Ault led the inning off with a walk. After a passed ball, Ana Macha singled and then after an error Ault scored to tie the game.
 
Union retook the lead in the fifth after a single and an obstruction call. Union extended the lead in the seventh scoring two more runs on three hits to win the game 5-2.
 
The Lady Flames only managed the get four hits in the loss while striking out six times. Macha had two of the hits while Scazlo and Goodridge had the others.
 
Madison Barnett started the game and went four innings and gave up two runs on five hits while striking out four. Layne Bailey took her second loss of the season. She gave up two runs on four hits while striking out three. Alaina Watson threw one inning and gave up one run on two hits with a strikeout.
