Box Score MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo handed the Lee University volleyball team its second straight Gulf South Conference road defeat on Saturday afternoon inside the Central State Bank Arena. The Falcons won the match in four sets, 20-25, 27-29, 25-17, 16-25. The loss dropped the Lady Flames to 5-7 overall and 1-2 in conference play. Montevallo earned its first GSC victory and improved to 4-8, 1-2.
After working overtime but still falling in the second set 29-27, the Lady Flames found new spark and won the third set by a commanding 25-17 mark. In doing so, they forced the home team into a pair of quick timeouts and were in command all the way.
The table turned in the fourth set when the Falcons came out and quickly jumped on top. In this set, it was Montevallo forcing Coach Christa Fabre to use both of her timeouts and the match belonged to what looked like a much better team than the Falcons record would indicate. They had a couple of strong hitters that gave Lee problems the entire afternoon.
Lee will continue its road adventures on Tuesday and face another opponent in Nashville in Trevecca Nazarene University. The Trojans are off to a 9-3 overall mark and are unbeaten at 3-0 in GSC play. The contest is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
The stats show Montevallo finishing with 50 kills and Lee 46. The difference likely is a .210 attack mark for the winners and a .179 for the Lady Flames. Sara Palumbo had 12 kills and a .207 attack percentage for Lee. Payton Danley finished with 11 slams and an even better .348 and added three blocks while Sophia Lippert tallied eight kills and a .250. Esthefany Rabit countered with six kills and also had four blocks.
Madison Dahl was the assist leader with 16 while Sydney Sharpe dished off 11 and Berra Soyler contributed nine. Izzy Denton delivered three service aces but the Lady Flames had only six aces on the day while committing 10 service errors. Denton came up with 14 digs and Mikayla Buhr went to the deck for 12.
The Falcons were led by a big afternoon from Mallory Hulsey who delivered 15 kills and had a .250 kill mark. Eliza Tyrrell had 11 while Blakeley Robbins delivered 37 assists and joined Ava Wind with 10 digs. Wind also was a key factor with five service aces and Nikol Antova had four of her teams 12 blocks.
