Flames Fall to MC in Overtime

Box Score CLINTON, Miss. – Mississippi College's Avaughn Johnson hit a three-point shot as time expired to send the Gulf South Conference matchup with Lee University to overtime on Thursday night. MC took the momentum and ran away in overtime to hand Lee its fourth straight road loss. With the loss, Lee dropped to 6-6 overall and 3-5 in GSC action.
 
It was a game of short runs in the first half. Zach Gray started the game strong for the Flames scoring the first five points. MC came back and took the lead 6-5. Lee answered to go up 11-6. MC answered right back to go up 12-11. After the game was tied up at 15-15, a 9-0 run behind three-point shots from Ben Ritger and Willie Walton gave Lee the 24-15 lead. MC brought it back to 26-21 before the Flames pushed it back out to a nine-point advantage. MC had one more short run and trailed 36-30 at the half.

The second half turned into a physical contest. The two teams combined for 23 fouls. Lee maintained the lead for the entire half, Gray, Ritger, and Jamarcus Wilkins all completed old-fashioned three-point plays to keep the lead at six each time for Lee. The Flames led by eight with three minutes left in the game before MC began to cut into the deficit. 

Avaughn Johnson for MC made it 77-75 with a minute left in the contest. Both teams then missed shots. The Choctaws fouled Tylon Chatman with 3.3 seconds left. At the free throw line he made one of two to give Lee a 78-75 lead. After a timeout, Johnson caught the inbounds pass and ran down the left side of the court. He sank a three-pointer as time expired to send the game into overtime.

In the extra period it was all MC. They made three field goals, but were12-of-13 from the free throw line and they won the game 97-87.

MC was 26-of-34 from charity in the win while Lee was 19-of-25. Ritger and Gray each had a career scoring day for the Flames. Ritger had 24 while Gray had 23. Chatman added 15 while Walton had 14. But it was Johnson for MC who led them to a win. He had 39 points and 11 rebounds in 43 minutes of action.

Lee will head to Cleveland, Miss. on Saturday to take on the Delta State Statesmen.
