Late Rally Leads Lady Flames Past CBU

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – It took a five run sixth inning, but the Lee University softball team completed the comeback to defeat Christian Brothers University 10-6 on Friday afternoon. The Lady Flames snapped a six-game losing streak and earned their 11th win of the season. 
 
The Lady Flames and Bucs will wrap up the season with a double header beginning at 1 PM on Saturday. 
 
Lee came out of the gate hot in the bottom of the first. Eva Armstrong singled and Sadie Winsett doubled. They were both brought home when Hayden Gardner hit her fifth home run of the season and Lee led 3-0.
 
CBU answered in the second inning. They used four singles and hit by a pitch to score two runs. Lee made it 4-2 in the bottom half of the second when Hailey Simco doubled to bring Katie Hastings home.
 
CBU scored another run behind a double and a single in the third. The Buc made it 5-4 in the fourth behind another double and a couple of singles. The final run for CBU came in the fifth behind two more singles and a double. 
 
The Lady Flames got one run back in the fifth. Armstrong singled, then Gardner, Addi Lewis and Alyson Jarvi all walked consecutively which brought Armstrong home. Lee won the game in the bottom of the sixth. Pinzon singled and then Simco walked. Winsett reached on a fielding error to load the bases. Gardner walked to score a run to make it 6-5. Then Addi Lewis doubled to clear the bases. She then scored on an error to make it the 10-6 final.
 
Armstrong had two hits while no one else had more than one hit. Gardner had four RBI while Lewis had three. CBU outhit Lee 14-8 but had two costly errors.
 
Layne Bailey started the game and threw four and two-third innings. She gave up six runs on 13 hits. Abigail Welbaum earned her third win of the year and gave up just one hit in two and one-third inning.
 
Coach Emily Russell's Thought's:
 
"We jumped out early and then went blank for a little bit. So we told the team just look for good pitches and make them throw it to you. And I awa really proud of how they responded in the late innings to get the win."
