CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The Lee University softball team snapped a six-game losing streak on Friday thanks to four home runs. Four different players left the yard, and the Lady Flames defeated Valdosta State University 5-3. The two teams will play a double header on Saturday beginning at 1 PM.
Lee jumped on the board in the first inning behind a two-run home run from Addi Lewis. She brought home Hailey Simco for her eighth home run of the season. In the second inning, Madison Pinzon hit her third home run of the year and made it 3-0.
The third inning saw Sadie Winsett join the party and hit her eighth home run of the season. VSU finally scored a run in the fifth. Evie Pitts hit a solo home run and then a couple of singles and an error allowed Adrianna Portanova to score to make it 4-2.
Simco hit the final home run for Lee in the bottom of the fifth. Her solo shot gave Lee a 5-2 lead. The Blazers tacked on one more run in the seventh when Charlotte Phillips drove in Portanova for their final run.
Both teams had seven hits apiece. Lee had two errors while the Blazers did not commit any.
Simco had two hits while everyone else just had one hit.
Kaylee Underwood earned her fifth win of the year throw four and two-thirds innings while giving up two runs on four hits. She also had four strikeouts. Layne Bailey earned the save going two and one-third innings giving up one run on three hits.
Coach Emily Russell's Thoughts:
"The team has worked hard this past week. Not having midweek games has allowed us to focus on getting a rhythm back. We had a emphasis on quality at bats and that showed today."
