Lady Flames Hold 29-Point Lead After First Day Of GSC Championships

Maddox Mayfield ran the third-fastest time in Wednesday's 200-meter prelims at the GSC Championships.

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – After the first day of competition at the 2026 GSC Outdoor Track & Field Championships the Lee University Lady Flames hold a 29 point lead over their nearest opponent. Five of the 21 events have been completed with the rest to be contested over the next two days at the University of Montevallo Track & Field Stadium.

Lee has amassed 80.5 points with Alabama Huntsville in second place with 51.5 points. Mississippi College is in third place with 45 points.

The Lady Flames picked up 24 points in the 10000-meter run. Aria Hawkins placed first at 39:05.99, while Capucine Cureau was right behind in second place (39:10.72). Lyndi Chapman crossed the line at 39:50.14 for fifth place and Sadie Wielfaert placed seventh with a time of 40:14.06. Dana Espinoza collected a 12th-place finishing time of 41:23.05.

Maria Mitchell led two other Lee runners to the top eight of the 3000-meter steeple chase. Mitchell set a new GSC Championships record and posted the fastest time among NCAA DII runners this season at 10:06.76 to win the event championship. Ava Sparks was third with a time of 10:44.43 and Sawyer Simmons completed the race at 11:37.37 for eighth place.

Brynn Depinet and Addison Kohlmeier claimed the top two spots in the pole vault. Depinet cleared 3.70 meters for first place. Kohlmeier finished second at 3.65 meters, 0.40 meters better than the next athlete. Ayla Misavage went over 3.10 meters to tie for fourth place with UAH's Gabby Stout.

Samara Brinks and Gracie Waite supplied five points to the team total with their performances in the hammer throw. Brinks placed fifth with a throw of 47.57 meters and Waite recorded a mark of 42.48 meters for eighth place.

Jydia Faucette and Marisa Hennix were third and fourth, respectively, in the long jump. Faucette covered 5.51 meters for third, while Hennix landed at 5.43 meters to add 11 more points to the tally.

Maddox Mayfield and Liz Lannom advanced out of the prelims of the 200-meter dash. They finished in the top two spots of Heat 1 to earn automatic qualifications. Mayfield stopped the clock at 24.35 seconds and Lannom finished at 24.63. Mayfield's time was third overall and Lannom posted the sixth-fastest time of the prelims. Faucette's time of 25.79 seconds put her in 14th place and out of qualifying for the event final.

Lily Brown is third in the heptathlon with three of the seven events (long jump, javelin and 800-meter run) remaining. She has accumulated 2,600 points and trails Hekla Magnusdottir of UAH by 429 points. Brooke Jones is in sixth place with 2,512 points.

Including the heptathlon, five events will award medals on Thursday. The others are the 5000-meter run, triple jump, discus and high jump.
