After completing the long road trip with convincing decisions over North Georgia and UWF, the Flames will return to Larry Carpenter Stadium on Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. and host Tusculum University in a non-conference game. They will be back on Olympic Field on Friday and Saturday when Valdosta State visits in an important three-game GSC series.
Game 2 – Lee 3, West Florida 1
Dylan Van Meeteren (4-1) hurled what Coach Mark Brew called "a gem" when he pitched a three-hitter against the Argos. The right-hander allowed one earned run, struck out five and did not issue a base on balls in working the complete seven-inning contest.
While Van Meeteren was in complete control on the mound, Aiden McClary produced two of Lee's four hits in the victory. The left-handed hitter also drove in all three of the Flames' scores.
Unlike game one, the Argos took the lead for the first time over the two games, going up 1-0 in the first inning. Lee rallied back in the top of the third to tie the game. Braden Gabel started the inning with a single that glanced off pitcher Elijah Roberts' shoulder. Nate Caraballo walked and Keilin Sanders put down a sac bunt that pushed Gabel and Caraballo to third and second. McClary made it a small-ball inning when his sacrifice fly to center plated Gabel.
Lee placed the lead in the hands of Van Meeteren in the fifth inning by scoring two runs and making it a 3-1 game. The rally started with two outs when Caraballo picked up his second walk of the contest and Sanders followed with a free pass. It was time for McClary to strike again. He drilled a shot off the right-centerfield wall that scored both Caraballo and Sanders, giving Van Meeteren all the run support he needed.
Landon Franklin joined Gabel with Lee's other hits. The Flames only left four runners on base while the Argos stranded just three base runners. West Florida used four pitchers. Roberts (1-4) was charged with the loss. Zach Stokes, Trent Kelly and William Lybrook collected the UWF hits.
Game 1 – Lee 9, West Florida 4
The Flames used some of their best pitching and hitting to clinch the series with the 9-4 victory. Luke Collier led the 10-hit parade with three hits while Landon Franklin had a pair of hits. All totaled seven Lee players had hits in the victory. For the second straight game, the Flames got solid pitching from starter Gabe Shaver and relievers Mason Bratcher and Tyler Pickens.
Lee jumped on top 1-0 in the second inning and never trailed. Franklin was hit by a pitch, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the Argo catcher. JJ Williams singled up the middle to pick up the RBI and put the Flames on top.
The margin reached 5-0 in the top of the fifth inning. Franklin started the rally with a single. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Williams. Nate Caraballo was hit by a pitch. Ryan Valdes grounded out to short that moved Franklin to third and Caraballo to second. Nate Dunfee picked up two key RBI with his one-base hit. Aiden McClary walked and Collier blasted a triple that plated Dunfee and McClary.
West Florida battled back to cut the lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the fifth. Shaver had been solid on the mound to that point, but Coach Mark Brew decided to call on reliever Mason Bratcher. The right-hander delivered, working the next 3.1 innings and allowing only one run. Tyler Pickens came on in the ninth and did not allow a hit.
In the 4.2 innings, Shaver allowed five hits and only two earned runs. Bratcher was credited with the pitching win and stands at 2-3 on the year. Shaver, Bratcher and Pickens gave the Flames exactly what they needed in securing the second game of the three-game series.
While Collier was collecting three hits, he also knocked in three runs. Dunfee tallied a pair of runs to go with his two RBI while Valdes scored once to go with the two runners that he plated. McClary and Williams had a run scored to go with their RBI. Lee drew five walks and left seven runners on base. The Argos were issued only four free passes but left 10 men on the sacks.
William Lybrook had three hits and a RBI for the Argos. No other West Florida player had more than one hit. The Argos used five pitchers in the loss. Tucker Ricks (5-2) started and was the loser. In five innings he allowed five hits and four earned runs, striking out three and walking one.
Coach Mark Brew's thoughts:
"What a day! I'm super proud of how this team played this weekend. Our pitching was great all day with Van Meeteren absolutely throwing a gem in game three. Bratcher got some huge outs coming in relief in game one. Our offense was clutch and we had some big hits with two outs and McClary had a big day at the plate."
