On what had been a scheduled off week, senior Emily Buwalda participated in the 2018 KMS Invitational at the Birmingham Crossplex Sunday afternoon and set a new school record to earn Lee University Female Athlete of the Week honors.

Buwalda made the best use of her day with a second place finish in the 800-meter run. Her time of 2:11.32 not only improved her NCAA Division II provisional qualifying time, it also broke Cayce Bryan's Lee record mark of 2:11.43 that was set in 2012.

Buwalda and Lady Flames travel to Winston-Salem, N.C., this weekend to compete at the Camel City Invitational. The two-day event (Feb.2-3) will be held at the JDL Fast Track.
