BIMRINGHAM, Ala. - Micaela Belen Maiz opened her career with the Lee tennis team in grand style as she scored victories at No. 1 doubles and No. 4 singles to earn Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Week the league office announced on Wednesday.

Belen-Maiz is from Buenos Aires, Argentina and helped lead the Lady Flames to a 9-0 shutout at North Greenville to open the 2019 season last Friday.

Belen-Maiz teamed with senior Asia Grzegrzolka to earn a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles. She would use that momentum to propel her to an easy, 6-1, 6-1 straight set victory at No. 4 singles.

“Mica had a strong week last week.  She has only been here for a month, but has already added so much to our program,” said Lee head coach Patric Hynes. “She’s been working very hard on her game and we are proud of her accomplishment.”

Belen Maiz and the Lady Flames will open the home portion of the schedule on Thursday as they welcome Carson-Newman to the DeVos Tennis Center. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
