MOBILE, Ala. – The Lee University men’s soccer season came to a close Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 loss at No. 7 University of Mobile in the first round of the SSAC Tournament. Lee entered the tournament as the No. 8 seed and Mobile was the top-seeded team.
The Flames finish with a record of 9-8-1 and Mobile (14-3-1) advances to the semifinal round to face Southern Polytechnic State University.
Stephen Okai put Mobile on the board in the 28
th minute with a goal from the top of the penalty area. Chris Dillon was credited with the assist.
Dillon gave Mobile a 2-0 halftime advantage with a header off Gaetan Massiah’s free kick in the 33
rd minute. Naissim Ayadi added an insurance goal in the 74
th minute off an assist by Okai.
The Flames put four of their 14 shots on goal, while Mobile put nine of its 23 shots on target. The Rams tallied 10 corner kicks and the Flames put seven in play.
Lee was guilty of being caught offside six times. Mobile was called offside once.
Freshman goalkeeper Tom Halsall recorded six saves in the loss. Xavier Audergon saved four shots to ensure the shutout for Mobile.
"I was proud of our effort tonight, but Mobile showed why they are conference champions," said Lee head coach Paul Furey. "Five seniors with us went down fighting to the end. Our younger players gave us reasons for optimism down the road. We made the most of a tough season and the boys, though disappointed, can be proud."
