Paula Martins killed nine balls in 10 attempts as the Lee volleyball team (8-5) opened play in the Southern States Athletic Conference play by downing visiting Brewton-Parker College, 3-0 (25-9,25-5, 25-18) in Walker Arena on Tuesday evening.
The Lady Flames are ranked fifth in this week's NAIA poll and they wasted little time in showing the Barons why they are one of the nation's top-ranked clubs. While Martins was on target with her slams, Lauren Williams was right behind with nine kills and a .500 attack percentage. Nicole Sumida followed with eight kills and a .545 percentage. Marija Zelenovic pitched in with eight kills and .533 on the attack, while Irene Ojukwu came away with seven slams and a .429 hitting percentage. As a team Lee had 48 kills, good enough for a very good .476 attack percentage.
Camil Martinez delivered 22 assists. Courtney Wilson totaled eight and Becky Bourne tallied seven. Patty Orozco had two aces. Libby Peigen came up with 10 digs and Sarah Davis added five digs.
The Lady Flames will continue SSAC play on Friday, hosting Mobile at 4 p.m. They will turn right around and test Spring Hill on Saturday at 1 p.m.
