The Lee University volleyball team survived a tough five-set battle with the visiting Brenau University Golden Tigers, winning 3-2 (25-18, 24-26, 28-30, 25-17, 15-9) Friday evening at Walker Arena.
With the victory the Lady Flames move to 14-6 overall and 6-1 in the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC). They are ranked sixth in the latest NAIA poll. The loss drops the Golden Tigers to 11-5 overall and 3-3 in conference play.
Lee was guided by junior Irene Ojukwu and freshman Nicole Sumida. Ojukwu posted a double-double, registering 17 kills to go along with 10 digs. Sumida, the Hixson, Tenn. native, lead the team with18 kills and finished with a .438 attack percentage.
Libby Peigen managed 20 digs on the evening for the Lady Flames while Camil Martinez set the table for her teammates with 53 assists. Paula Martins added 10 kills of her own to give the host club three players with double-figure kills. Rachael Cunningham helped complete the victory with eight timely kills and eight digs.
The Golden Tigers were paced by Sydney Koon with 16 kills. Melissa Thornton and Ellen Lemos followed right behind, adding 15 kills each. Mekenna Cipres lead the way with 52 assists for the Gainesville, Ga. based club.
The victory was the fifth straight on the year for the Lee volleyball squad. They will look to extend that streak to six on Thursday when they will head to Montgomery, Ala. to battle SSAC foe Faulkner University at 6 p.m.
