Box Score ORLANDO, Fla. – The Lee University women's tennis team rebounded from Saturday's loss at Valdosta State with a 9-0 blanking of Southwest Minnesota State University Sunday morning at the Lake Crane Tennis Center.
Lee (8-5) took little time to grab the first two doubles matches for an early lead over the Mustangs (0-10). Marta Garcia-Nieto and Francesca Tondi shut out Crystal Overbaugh and Gabby Tellijohn at No. 1 doubles. Laura Beth Hardesty and Morgan Friedlander dropped just two points to Madyson Brinkman and Jenna Gannott in the No. 3 slot.
The big battle turned out to be at No. 2 doubles. Krista Good and Maclain Yowarsky needed a 7-5 margin in a tie-breaker to record the 9-8 win over Britney Thompson and Ashley Hoehne.
Tondi recorded a clean sheet with 6-0, 6-0 scores against Overbaugh. Garcia-Nieto secured the team victory with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Tellijohn.
Good defeated Hoehne 6-0, 6-2 and Friedlander posted the same scores in opposite sets to take down Gannott. Yowarsky held off Mariya Krumm to win their opening set, 7-5. She then finished the match with a 6-0 margin in set two.
Nicole Shennett saw her first action in the top six since October and earned a hard-fought three-set win over Thompson. Shennett dropped the first set 6-1 and battled back to force a final set with a 6-3 second set score. The freshman posted a 10-7 mark in the super set tie-breaker to complete the team shutout.
The Flames and Lady Flames will continue their spring break trip in Orlando with a pair of matches on Monday. Both squads will take on University of the Sciences in Philadelphia in the morning. The Lady Flames will then take on University of Sioux Falls, while the Flames challenge Monmouth College.
