Lady Flames Trip To Dominican Republic: Day 2

by Abby Bertram, Haley Schubert and Morgan Carbaugh

We started our day with a scrumptious breakfast buffet at the resort. From there, we headed to Pasitos de Jesus, which is a home for girls. There we spent a couple hours getting to know the girls and trying our best to understand their language.

Even with the language barrier, we still made a connection through love. This experience humbled us because they were so content and joyful for what they had even though, their lifestyle is a lot simpler than ours. Before we left the home, the girls sang a few songs for us about their love for Jesus, Angela, our manager shared her testimony with the group, and we had the opportunity to pray for the girls.

We then went to the SCORE house and ate a delightful lunch. Lunch consisted of rice, beans, fried chicken, meatballs, and a salad bar. From there, we had a couple hours to rest up before we played our first basketball game. Some of us napped to recover from the travel day before, while others soaked up the sun by the pool.

In downtown Santo Domingo, we made our way to a gym very unfamiliar to any of us. The gym was basically the size of Lee University's. However, it was like an outdoor court with walls, stadium seats, and a roof.

The team we played, Saint Carlos, were tall, strong, and fast. It took us a minute to adjust to the international rules, but we finally got the hang of it. We ended winning 55-31. After the game, we gathered at center court to introduce ourselves, tell them the reason we were here, and Tori Lentz shared her testimony.

Finally, we went back to the SCORE house, were Hector prepared superb pizzas for us for dinner. After eating dinner, we came back to the resort, wrote in our travel journals, and met to go over the next days itinerary. Thanks for reading and stay tuned for tomorrow's blog.
