Lee University Flames ace Logan Workman was selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the seventh round (Pick 221) of the Major League Baseball Draft on Monday afternoon.
Workman is a native of Soddy Daisy, Tenn. and led the Flames to the program's first NCAA South Region appearance and Gulf South Conference Championship this past season. The All-American posted a 13-1 over the last two seasons with a 1.21 ERA. He struck out 110 batters in just 79.2 innings pitched.
An analyst on MLB Network's Draft Coverage stated that, "He's got size and durability and should be a professional starter or with his fastball could be a weapon out of the bullpen. Workman has been on our radar and he is one of the best non-D1 pitchers in this year's draft".
"I am extremely excited for Logan. I've had a front row seat in his development as a pitcher over the past four years from a hard throwing bullpen guy as a freshman to a pitcher who can command three pitches and ascended to the top ranked NCAA Division II prospect," said Lee head coach Mark Brew. "He will be a great fit for a Rays organization that has a history of developing quality young arms."
Brew added, "Coach Goodenow (former Lee pitching coach) deserves a lot of credit for assisting with Logan's development. He worked tirelessly with him to expedite his development. I am honored to have coached Logan and look forward to watching his development in the Rays organization. They are not only getting a quality pitcher, but a quality young man."
Overall, 32 Flames have been drafted or signed free agent deals with MLB teams. Workman joins Myles Smith (pick 113 4th round Boston Red Sox) Lance Zawadzki (pick 147 4th round San Diego Padres) Kris Hall (pick 259 8th round Oakland A's) and Jose Samayoa (pick 280 9th round Texas Rangers) as players drafted inside the top 10 rounds.
