Lady Flames Win Fourth Straight GSC Indoor Title

The celebration is on as the Lady Flames celebrate their fourth straight GSC Indoor title.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Lee women's track and field captured its unprecedented fourth consecutive Gulf South Conference Indoor Championship with a dominating 92.5 point victory over the field on Wednesday at the Birmingham Crossplex.

Overall, the Lady Flames have claimed a remarkable 15 consecutive GSC Cross Country, Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field titles and show no signs of letting up.

"Every single time we come to championship meets our girls always rise to the occasion and it just speaks to the culture of this team and our veteran leaders," said Lee Director of Track and Field Caleb Morgan.

The distance medley relay team of Aria Hawkins, Lily Hare, Liza Kellerman, and Eve Hine set the tone on day one of the championship with a GSC meet record time of 11:39.22.  Hare would also go on to claim the top spot in the 800m as she raced around the track at 2:14.95

"That's the third time we ran the DMR this year and we really thought that with a conference meet on the line we could run our best time and that's what we did and I'm really proud of them," said Morgan. "Last year we claimed All-American status in the event and that's the fastest regular season time we've ran so that's exciting."

Hawkins would also capture a GSC record in the mile with a sizzling time of 4:56:26, topping the old meet record of former Lady Flame and now assistant coach, Toni Moore (5:07.01) set in 2021. The sophomore ran the 800m as well and finished on the podium in third place with a time of 2:16.50.

Freshman led the way in the 5000m as Megan Adams raced past the competition with a time of 17:28 while teammate Julia Halterman finished third at 17:35.56. Adams took home the GSC Outstanding Track Performance honor.

Liezl Theron battled through injury to take home gold in the Pentathlon and was named the GSC Outstanding Field Performer. Carissa Hall was tops in the long jump with a leap of 5.82m and placed third in the triple jump at 11.59m. Freshman Brynn Depinet started her first in GSC Championship in style with gold in the Pole Vault as she cleared 3.75m.

Deborah Rubin placed second in the weight throw at 18.46m and registered a third-place finish in the shot put as she launched it 13.21m.

"Liezel has battled through a shoulder injury all season, and she showed a lot of toughness to battle out there and win the Pentathlon and earn the GSC Most Outstanding Field Performer," noted Morgan. "I'm also really proud of Megan, in her first Indoor Championship, for winning Outstanding Track Performer and scoring 20 points for us. Deborah Rubin did a great job in throws to score us big points as well and has had a fantastic career. Overall, I'm really proud of our team all around and how they continue to show up and compete at such a high level. It's not easy to win these championships and everyone is special," concluded Morgan.

The Lady Flames will now turn their attention to the Boston University Last Chance Meet and the NCAA Indoor Track and Field National Championships on Mar. 10-11 in Virginia Beach, Va.
