ALBANY, Georgia – Bennett McNabb stepped up with an outstanding round of 6-under par 66, but it was not enough to overcome the dominating individual play of North Georgia and West Florida in the Hurricane Invitational that was hosted by Georgia Southwestern at the Doublegate Country Club on Monday and Tuesday.
McNabb's Tuesday round of 66 featured eight birdies and two bogies on the par-72 layout. He began play on Monday with even-par rounds of 72 and placed tied for seventh overall in the 54-hole event with a 210. Teammate Luke Stock gave the Flames a pair of finishers in the top 10 when he put impressive totals of 68-72-69 – 209 on the board, good enough for one spot higher than McNabb and a tie for sixth.
North Georgia's Jack Vajda continues to be a prime-time player in the fall tournaments. His 10-under 206 claimed the medalist crown. The Nighthawks and Argonauts placed four golfers in the top five leaders.
North Georgia also won the team honors (835), followed by West Florida (844) in the second spot. Georgia Southwestern (850) was third while Anderson (S.C.) and Lincoln Memorial were tied for fourth (851), and Lee placed sixth (857).
Also for the Flames, George Cordall
l tallied a 75-71-73 – 219, Drew Zielinski put up 75-72-75 – 221 numbers and Matthew
Render rounds out the scoring with his 78-74-75 – 226.
A total of 15 teams and 81 individuals took part in the 54-hole tournament. The Flames will wrap up their fall schedule on Oct. 15-16 when they travel to Palm Harbor, Fla. to be a part of the annual Copperhead Classic hosted by the University of West Florida.
Coach Evan Spence's thoughts:
"Another really nice week from both Bennett and Luke. Bennett continues to turn the corner and take that next step towards being a really elite player in Division II and Luke just continues to be rock solid for us week in and week out.:
"As a team this week, we struggled to score on the par 5s. If you break it down, our par 3 and par 4 performances were really solid enough to contend this week, but the par 5s held us back in a major way."
"I know this group is capable of much better things than that on those scoring holes and that will be a big point of focus for us the rest of this week before we hit the road again to close out the season next week at Innisbrook (Fla.)."
