Hampton and Johnson Each Earn First Team All-GSC Accolades

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Both Mallory Hampton and Haylee Johnson were recognized by the Gulf South Conference on Tuesday afternoon as First Team-All GSC members. The two guards for the Lee University women's basketball team were the only two from the same school as first team members. It is the first time since thr 2019-2020 season that Lee has had two on the first team. In 2020, Abby Betram and Haley Schubert were recognized as First Team All-GSC.

Lili Wilken from the University of Alabama in Huntsville was named GSC Player of the Year. Aburey Sorrells from the University of Montevallo was the freshman of the year, and Mark Campbell from Union Univeristy was GSC coach of the year.

Hampton has had a dynamic year. Prior to her injury, where she missed six games, she was averaging almost 20 points per game and was shooting over 50% from the floor. She is still third in points per game in the GSC. She is second in FG%, first in FT%, 12th in made three pointers, sixth in assists, tenth in assist turnover ratio, and sixth in steals. She has scored in doubles figures in all but three games this year. She has six games with 20 or more points and had 34 points at Union in the win.

Haylee Johnson has been an unstoppable player in games this year. She is seventh in the GSC in scoring and leads the conference in assists. She has 20 more assists than anyone else this season in the conference. When Mallory Hampton went down with injury, Johnson took over games. In a seven game stretch, she averaged 19.7 points per game, 8.6 assists a game, and 5.6 rebounds a game. She almost had a triple double in three different games. Haylee is currently 8th in FT% in the GSC, top in assists, 5th in assist/turnover ratio, and 18th in steals. She has 16 games scoring in double figures. She scored 30 against Montevallo and has scored 20 or more points in a game six times. She also played 53 minutes in a 3OT game against MC and did not commit a foul.

Head Coach Marty Rowe is very proud of the accomplishment for his two guards. "What a great accomplishment for Haylee Jo and Mal, it says a lot about how coaches in the GSC view them both. Obviously, they have had different seasons. Mallory battled through that serious knee injury, give her credit she has worked so hard to get back on the court and continues to play at a high level. Haylee just took her game to a different level when Mal went down, I'm glad fans have gotten to see what we see daily." He also noted, "Both scenarios show how tough and highly competitive these two really are, the humility both show by not caring who gets credit is a major reason for our teams success."

The Lady Flames will open the GSC tournament against Mississippi College on Tuesday, March 4 at 6 PM at Walker Arena.
