Flames In First Place After First Day of GSC Outdoor Championships

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – After the first day of competition at the 2026 GSC Outdoor Track & Field Championships the Lee University Flames hold a 20 point lead over their nearest opponent. Five of the 21 events have been completed with the rest to be contested over the next two days at the University of Montevallo Track & Field Stadium.

Lee has amassed 67 points with Mississippi College in second place with 47 points. Alabama Huntsville is close behind in third place with 45 points, while Montevallo's 36 points have them in fourth.

The Flames picked up 18 points in the 10000-meter run. Tucker Wright placed first at 30:44.28, while Edimo Ninteretse was right behind in second place (30:48.67). Elijah Moran stopped the clock at 32:26.58 for ninth place and Luke Chapuran was 13th (32:57.53).

Stephen Clark led four other Lee runners into the 3000-meter steeple chase where he claimed the event championship with a time of 8:58.04. Parker Campbell placed second at 9:04.59 and Luke Gaddis put three Flames in the top four with a fourth-place finish of 9:11.39. CJ Jeffords (9:27.06) finished seventh and Kylian Boulanger (9:30.27) was ninth.

Shaw Helfrich cleared 4.80 meters to win the pole vault by 0.10 meters over Ben Rouse of UAH. Wyatt Irvine added a fifth-place finish with a mark of 4.40 meters. Jacob Atkinson cleared 3.95 meters for 11th.
Helfrich also placed seventh in the long jump. He covered 6.62 meters. Jacob Salters finished 10th with a jump of 6.39 meters and Hudson Hunt was 13th with a measurement of 6.22 meters.

Carrington Tate and Rodney Ngezimani added eight points to the Lee total in the hammer throw. Tate placed fourth with a throw of 51.88 meters and Ngezimani was sixth with a toss of 49.89 meters. Ian Trill posted a mark of 46.54 meters for 11th place.

At the halfway point of the decathlon, Silas Fulford is in fourth place with 3,105 points. Timothy Doolittle is in seventh with 2,920 points. Jake McMilan of Mississippi College leads the field with 3,778 points. The events remaining to be completed are the 110-meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500-meter run.

Four Lee runners advanced to the final of the 200-meter dash. Cooper Giddens and Eli Cobble were the top two finishers in Heat 1, Aiden Shaw won Heat 2 and Gage Whited was second in Heat 3 to earn automatic qualification for the final. Giddens recorded the second-fastest qualifying time at 21.39 seconds, while Shaw was third (21.74) and Whited was fourth (21.47). Cobble posted the sixth-best time at 21.79 seconds.
 
Including the decathlon, five events will award medals on Thursday. The others are the 5000-meter run, high jump, triple jump and discus.
