Lee cross country coach Don Jayroe continues his effort to whip the Flames into a top challenger in the NAIA running world. Recently Jayroe, who is getting ready for his second season at Lee, signed Nathan Bennett of Marietta, Ga.
Bennett ran for the highly successful Dominion Christian High School track and cross country programs. For the last two years he has been the cross-country team's MVP and has been all-region and all-state in the Georgia Independent School Association (GISA) and helped Dominion claim region and state championships. His best time in the 5k was a 16:41.
The new Flame also was the track team's captain for 2007-08 and again won MVP honors. He ran the 3200 in 10:01 and the 1600 in 4:39. While not running, Bennett takes great pride in being an Eagle Scout.
"I liked the coach (Jayroe) and I also liked what's ahead for Lee cross country," said Bennett. "I also enjoy helping build programs and I believe Lee is going to be something special."
Bennett looked at Clayton State, Ole Miss, Lees McRae, Queens (N.C.) and Gardner-Webb before selecting Lee. He also pointed out that he has sisters at Lee and one is a cheerleader. "I started running when I was a freshman," he noted. "I'm looking at maybe a degree in business, sports medicine or pre-law. I've got plenty of time to decide."
Jayroe says that Bennett is a smooth runner and understands what it takes to improve. "He will really be challenged at this level. We are very blessed to have been able to sign two quality freshmen runners like Nathan and Michael (Walker from Red Bank High School). They are planning to room together and both are excited about their cross country futures. They have been No. 1 runners in high school and I believe both will step in and help our program immediately."
