CENTRAL, S.C.- Hollie German and Jenna Adams combined for 44 points as the Lee women's basketball team defeated Southern Wesleyan University 72-59 Thursday evening.
The Lady Flames held a 13-point advantage at the intermission, leading 33-20. SWU cut the lead down to eight in the second stanza but could get no closer.
The victory was the 11th straight for the fifth-ranked Lady Flames (14-1, 5-1). With the loss the Warriors fall to 5-9 overall and 0-6 in the SSAC.
"It's good to get out of here with a win, but I feel like we got out played today in every phase of the game." admitted Coach Marty Rowe. "I thought we just went through the motions in the second half."
German, who leads the SSAC in scoring, led the way for Lee with 22 points. Adams also registered 22 markers as she was a perfect 4-of-4 from 3-point range. The sophomore also added nine boards.
Karley Miller added 12 points and seven rebounds down in the post for the Lady Flames. Senior guard Brooke Hamby rounded out the scoring chipping in eight points.
Lee shot 46 percent from the field, hitting 25-of-54 shots. Most of the damage was done from the 3-point line as the Lady Flames shot a sizzling 52 percent, hitting 11-of-21 from beyond the arc. The Warriors shot 40 percent from the field (19-of-47) and 42 percent from 3-point distance, hitting 8-of-19.
"We shot the ball well from three and that was a key for us but we can't turn the ball over like we did tonight and expect to win most nights." said Rowe.
Lee turned the ball over 19 times leading to 11 points for the Warriors. Southern Wesleyan committed 26 floor mistakes leading to 14 points for the Lady Flames.
"Defensively we did not play well, we looked slow and we didn't hustle after loose balls. We need to make adjustments on that end of the court." noted Rowe.
The Warriors were led in scoring by Lauren Johnson with 25 points, as she went 4-of-9 from the 3-point line. Ashley Cooper added 19 markers and five boards for the South Carolina club.
Rowe looked ahead to the Lady Flames next matchup, "Their (Coastal Georgia) two best players are their post players. We expect a physical battle on Saturday and we know we're going to get their best shot. We'll need to play a much better game than we played tonight."
Lee returns home on Saturday to meet the College of Coastal Georgia for the first time ever. The SSAC newcomers bring with them a record of 14-3 overall and are 6-1 in conference play. Tip time is set for 2 p.m. at Walker Arena.
