HUNTSVILLE, Ala.- Throughout the first year of NCAA Division II and Gulf South Conference (GSC) play the Lee women's basketball team has relied heavily on the play of senior Hollie German and junior Jenna Adams.
Saturday afternoon was no different as the veteran duo combined to score 71 of Lee's points to help the Lady Flames defeated Alabama-Huntsville 91-80. The victory moves Lee to 10-4 overall and 6-2 in the GSC. The loss drops the Chargers to 9-5 and an even 4-4 in conference play.
German registered a career-high 38 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the field. The senior guard was a near perfect 14-of-15 from the charity stripe while also dishing off seven assists and pulling down five boards. Adams completed another double-double performance with 33 points and 12 rebounds. She was 7-of-8 from the foul line and 6-of-15 from behind the arc.
"We played much better than we played on Thursday. This is a resilient bunch and they came back and responded today." said Rowe. "We did a great job finding Hollie (German) and Jenna (Adams) today and they did a great job of finishing. Hollie is the best player in the league and she'll be the first to admit that her teammates have a huge impact as well."
Despite winning his 400th victory on Thursday against West Alabama, Rowe was not pleased with his team's execution, particularly on the offensive end. Saturday was a different story as Lee shot 47.3 percent from the field and hit 35.3 percent from 3-point distance while eclipsing the 90-point mark.
Both teams exchanged punches for the first 10 minutes of action. Lee would use a 12-1 run to take a 30-20 advantage with 6:30 remaining in the opening half. The Lady Flames maintained the double-digit lead until a late Chargers run cut the margin to seven at 82-75 with 1:26 remaining in the contest. Late free throws would help Rowe's club close out the 11-point road victory.
Alex (Swope) and Melanie (Barker) played really well against their pressure defense" noted Rowe. "We've learned that we can compete in the league with anybody and getting a sweep on the road this week proves that. We continue to get better and tonight we had to play really well to win and we were able to do that."
The Lady Flames dominated the glass outrebounding the home team 49-36. The Lee defense limited UAH to 33.8 percent shooting from the field.
Lee was guilty of 23 turnovers leading to 14 points for UAH. The Chargers committed just 14 floor mistakes leading to 14 points for the Lady Flames. Rowe's club did a great job distributing the basketball finishing with 18 assists in the contest.
Alabama-Huntsville was led by Jordan Smith and Jasmine Hammon. Smith tallied 28 points while Hamon added 26. Shannon Steinert rounded out the double-digit scoring with 10 markers.
"This is a great venue and a great place to play." allowed Rowe. "The atmosphere was exciting and we really enjoyed it."
The Lady Flames will return home and welcome West Georgia to Walker Arena for a 6 p.m. conference battle on Thursday. Lee will host its annual "Hoops for Hope" night on Saturday when they tangle with old rival Shorter University at 5 p.m.
