VALDOSTA, Ga.- The Lee women's basketball team completed a season sweep of the Valdosta State Lady Blazers with a 65-53 victory on Saturday night.
The Lady Flames shot a sizzling 45.8 percent (11-of-24) from behind the arc to help grind out the road victory. Lee also made the most of 20 free throw opportunities hitting 16 (80 percent).
"Winning on the road is at a premium right now in this league. We shot it like crazy tonight, it was the best shooting night we've had all year." said head coach Marty Rowe.
The Lady Flames came out firing in the first 20 minutes of action shooting 52.9 percent from the field while hitting 7-of-13 from 3-point range to take a 30-28 advantage into the locker room.
The Lady Blazers responded in the early moments of the second half with a 9-3 run to take a 37-33 lead at the first media time out. The Lady Flames would answer with a 12-6 run of its own to jump back on top for good at 45-44 with 9:44 remaining.
Senior Hollie German tallied a game-high 20 points for the Lady Flames. The guard was a perfect 4-of-4 from 3-point distance and 8-of-9 from the free throw line. Madison Lee would also hit four treys and finished with 13 points in the contest. Jenna Adams scored 18 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the field. The double-double machine would also pull down 10 boards.
"Hollie (German) and Jenna (Adams) played well and they're going to score for us but having that other person step up like Madison (Lee) did tonight was big for us." noted Rowe.
German's 20 points helps her reach another milestone in her illustrious career. The Benton native now has 2,014 points in her career. She is just the fourth Lee women's basketball player to reach the elusive 2,000-point club.
Lee dominated on the glass outrebounding the Lady Blazers 27-16. The Lady Flames were guilty of 18 floor mistakes while dishing off 14 assists. Valdosta State committed 11 turnovers to go along with 10 assists.
"Down the stretch we were good tonight and did a good job of executing." said Rowe. "We're starting to understand that all these teams are going to make runs and we have to trust ourselves and I think we did that tonight."
The Lady Blazers used a balanced scoring attack. April Thomas and Maggie Davis led the way with nine points each. ReShaundra Owens and Kourtnee Williams followed with eight markers respectively. The home team would shoot just 32.7 percent (18-of-55) from the field and converted just 5-of-24 (20.8 percent) from behind the arc.
The victory keeps Lee in sole possession of second place in the GSC at 13-4 overall and 9-2 in conference play. The loss drops VSU to 9-8 on the year and 4-7 in GSC action.
The Lady Flames will look for some revenge on Thursday night when they welcome North Alabama to Walker Arena for a 6 p.m. tip. The Lions defeated Lee 82-77 in overtime on Jan. 4.
