JACKSON, Tenn. - Coach Mark Brew described pitcher Dustin Lawson's performance as a "Harry Houdini" in Lee's 1-0 victory over host Union University. The win gave the Flames a 2-1 edge in the three-game series as Brew's crew opened the 2014 Gulf South Conference season.

"Dustin Lawson pulled his best impersonation of Harry Houdini finding ways to get out of innings," said Brew. "We turned some big double-play balls and found ways to make big pitches the entire game. Our bullpen came in and did an excellent job of finishing up. Offensively, we struggled all weekend and they did a good job against our hitters. We will definitely have to find a way to get a spark offensively as we move forward.

Lawson (2-0) worked six complete innings to pick up the pitching win. He surrendered only three hits, but walked six and hit two Bulldog batters. Grayson Bailey came on for an inning. Jeremy Bales hurled 1 1/3 innings and Derick Pitts came on to get the final out and record his second save of the campaign.

The Flames scored the only run of the game in the third inning. Josh Silver walked to open the rally. He raced to third on a single by Pitts and then scored when Zacary Hawkins collected an RBI on a ground out.

Lee posted six hits off a pair of Union hurlers. Derek Roof (2-1) pitched six innings and took the loss. Samuel Davis came on for the final three frames. Roof also had control problems, walking six.

Hawkins was the only Lee batter with two hits, both singles. Pitts, Blake Ray, Josh Tate and Siosi Poti also collected a one-bagger. Russell Wacey had two hits for the losers and Zach Wylie had the game's only extra base hit.

"Overall anytime you win two-of-three on the road it's a good weekend," added Brew. "We will take it at this point in time, but we have lots of areas of our game that we have to improve in. Our offense has to get better and our base running has to improve. We need a break in the weather so we could practice as we prepare to travel to Alabama-Huntsville next weekend."
