HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The University of Alabama-Huntsville scored four runs in the second inning and went on to a 6-2 victory over visiting Lee on Sunday afternoon. The win gave the Chargers the weekend series two games to one.

GAME 3

Walks proved costly in the first two innings of Huntsville's 6-2 win. Lee starter Dustin Lawson (2-1) battled control problems and allowed one hit, three walks and four earned runs in 1 1/3 innings. Ryan Zimmer came on for the next two frames and surrendered three hits and an earned run.

The 4-0 advantage was all Huntsville starting pitcher Drew Eiland (3-0) would need. The Chargers tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the fourth inning.

Lee (9-4, 3-3) used five pitchers before the day ended. Carlos Ditren, Jeremy Bales, and Grayson Bailey followed Lawson and Zimmer to the mound and turned in solid performances.

The Flames fought back and scored two runs in the seventh inning when Andres Nelo drove home Siosi Poti and Cameron Brewster with a double. Nelo finished with two hits as did Josh Silver, who also doubled. Poti collected a two base knock, while Jordan Stewart and Brewster had Lee's other hits.

Huntsville also did damage with extra base hits. Blake Massey paved the way with three hits including a double, two RBI. Austin Sanders drove in two more runs with a two-base knock and Cotton Simbeck drilled a triple and pushed two more runs across the dish.

"We spotted a good team too many runs early," said coach Mark Brew. "The disappointing part was them having four runs on two hits, so the walks killed us in the second inning as it will do almost every time.

"Our bullpen did a good job of settling us down but we are not swinging the bats well enough to give up runs," added Brew. "Give UAH all the credit. They made us look bad at the plate most of the weekend.

"We will go back to work in practice tomorrow (Monday). We have another quality opponent in West Georgia coming to town next weekend. We are learning more and more about our team every day and we need to start responding in a lot of areas."

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- Lee University's baseball team avenged a 4-3 loss to The University of Alabama in Huntsville in the opening game of a Gulf South Conference (GSC) doubleheader with a 3-1 victory in game two Saturday afternoon.

Lee (9-3. 3-2 GSC) and No. 23 UAH (9-4, 3-2 GSC) are scheduled to face off again in the third and final game of the series on Sunday at 2 p.m.

"We have a great opportunity to take a series on the road from a ranked team on Sunday," said Lee head coach Mark Brew. "It will be a big test for our guys against a very good UAH team."

LEE 3, UAH 1

Nikolay Uherek allowed just two hits over 5 2/3 innings pitched to help the Flames to the win. Uherek (3-0) walked three and struck out six.

Kyle Briner threw 1 1/3 innings in relief to pick up his first save of the season. Briner gave up a solo home run in the seventh inning, walked one and fanned two.

"Once again our pitching and defense were top notch," said Brew. "Uherek and Briner did a great job and made some huge pitches in big situations."

Andres Nelo led the Lee offense with a 2-for-2 performance, including a double.

Jordan Stewart put the Flames on the board with an RBI double that plated Derrick Pitts in the fourth inning. Josh Tate gave Lee a 2-0 lead with a single up the middle that brought Stewart around to score. Pitts singled to leadoff the inning.

Josh Silver was 1-for-3 and drove in an insurance run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning.

Alex Aultman (1-2) was charged with the loss after giving up two runs on six hits and walking one in 3 1/3 innings of work.

UAH 4, LEE 3

A ninth-inning comeback attempt fell short for the Flames. Lee entered its final at bat trailing by four and having only one hit in the game.

Pitts got the rally started with a two-out single. Zacary Hawkins followed with another single and Stewart drilled a home run to left field to close the gap to 4-3. A ground out to the first baseman put a cap on the Lee scoring.

Tate's single in the second inning was Lee's only other hit of the game.

"We struggled mightily offensively until the ninth inning," admitted Brew. "(Tyler) Howell did a great job on us and we had no answer at the plate. We pitched and played defense well enough to win, but just ran out of outs at the plate."

Jeremy Stawychny gave up three runs, six hits, walked one and struck out seven batters in 6 2/3 innings. Stawychny (2-2) was charged with the loss.

Howell (4-0) earned the win after hurling 8 2/3 innings. He gave up four hits, three runs, two walks and struck out five. Luke Mould retired the only batter he faced to pick up his third save of the season.
