Box Score 2 The Lady Flames tennis team earned its first victory of the season with a 7-2 defeat of visiting Martin Methodist College, while the Flames fell, 7-2, to the RedHawks Saturday afternoon at the DeVos Tennis Center.
The Lady Flames (1-1) took a 2-1 lead following doubles action. Marta Garcia-Nieto teamed with Krista Good to beat Victoria Ryjak and Laura Ariza, 8-3. Jodie Rice and Christy North took down Ashlee Elkins and Michaela Maher, 8-1.
Martin Methodist (0-1) picked up a win a No. 1 doubles. Gema Bolado Yusta and Brenda Rique outlasted Tonya McGraner and Maclain Yowarsky for a 9-7 win.
Lee posted wins in five of the six singles matches with four of those coming in straight sets. McGraner won 7-5, 6-1 over Yusta at the No. 1 spot. Good held off Ariza for a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles. Rice dropped just one game to Elkins and Friedlander blanked Maher.
Garcia-Nieto lost her first set, 7-6, before coming back to claim the No. 3 singles match with 6-0 and 6-2 scores in the next two sets.
Ryjak garnered MMC's only singles win at the No. 2 position with matching 6-3 margins in both sets.
The Flames (0-2) fell into a 3-0 hole with Martin Methodist (1-0) sweeping the doubles competition. Daniel Hardesty and Rhys Milne lost 8-3 to Ramiro Vargas and Cristian Arias at No. 1 doubles. Westley Lemke and Mike Herrelle were held off by Salomon Persson and Daniel Emirzian, 8-4. Ignacio Salom and Kip Kahler were beaten 8-1 by Raphael Monzione and Nicolas Galleguillo.
Milne and Lemke claimed wins at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively. Milne dropped his first set 7-5, but came back to force a third set with a 6-3 margin. He finished the match with a 10-7 mark in the final super set. Lemke needed to do the same following a 6-3 loss in the opening set. He won the second set 6-4 and claimed the match with a 10-5 super set margin.
Salom, in his first action of the season, lost to Vargas 6-3 and 6-2. Hardesty was edged 7-5, 6-4 by Arias. Herrelle fell 6-2 and 6-0 to Galleguillo, while Kahler was beaten 6-0 and 6-1 by Emirzian.
Both Lee squads are scheduled to travel to Young Harris College (Ga.) for a match at 2 p.m. on Tuesday.
