After hitting five home runs in her first eight colleigate starts freshman Hallie Davis will lead a heavy hitting Lee softball team into conference play this weekend as they host West Florida.
The Lady Flames open GSC action at 5-3 after posting wins against Bellarmine, Montevallo twice, Miles and Tuskegee. Lee dropped close contests to Midwestern State (5-4) and No. 7 Missouri-St. Louis (9-7) in the Gulf Shores Invitational last weekend.
GSC FRESHMAN OF THE WEEKDavis, a local product from Walker Valley High School, was named the GSC Freshman of the Week on Tuesday. She started things off on Thursday with a home run, a triple and five RBI as the Lady Flames fired past Montevallo, 18-7.
Davis continued to roll down at the Gulf Shores Invitational. Lee played five games in three days and finished the event at 3-2. Davis was 6 of 18 with four home runs, one double and eight RBI.
BOMBS AWAYDavis wasn't the only one hitting long balls over the weekend as seniors NiaRaye Ceasar and Emily Dagnan joined freshmen Davis and Stevie Baird in homering.
Lee is hitting .357 on the year and slugging at a .543 clip to start the season.
EYE ON THE ARGOSWest Florida is also off to a quick start, posting a 5-1 mark and riding a four-game winning streak under second-year coach Melissa Paul. The Argonauts have claimed victories over Tuskegee, Miles, Young Harris, Flagler and Simon Fraser while also competing down in Gulf Shores , Ala.
West Florida is led by pitchers Kalyn Chapman, Sarah Maloney and Becca Taylor who combined for a 2.60 ERA over last weekend and held opposing batters to a .250 average in six games.
Offensively the Argos Jacey Castro is hitting .391 with a homer and seven RBI through six games.
UP NEXT WEEKThe Lady Flames will step back out of conference for mid-week doubleheader with King University on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Butler Field. Nex weekend Lee will travel to play the always tough No. 18 Alabama Huntsville Chargers.
