The Lady Flames tennis team claimed two of the three doubles matches, but won just one of the six singles matches in a 6-3 Gulf South Conference (GSC) loss to Delta State University Friday afternoon at the DeVos Tennis Center.
Lee (5-3, 1-3 GSC) will take a short break from GSC action when they host Emmanuel College on Saturday at 11 a.m.
Delta State (4-1, 1-0 GSC) took a quick lead with an 8-3 win by Celina Stracke and Sara Alvarez-Rubio over Maclain Yowarsky and Laura Beth Hardesty. Francesca Tondi and Marta Garcia Nieto evened the score by beating Charlotte Le Flohic and Nathalia Sato, 8-2.
Joanna Grzegrzolka and Morgan Friedlander earned a hard-fought win at No. 3 doubles. The duo needed a 7-3 tie-breaker to record the match, 9-8, against Ione' Deroode and Alex Howe.
"We got off to a great start with doubles," said Lee head coach Patric Hynes. "Fran and Marta took care of business. Morgan and Asia did a fantastic job closing out their match in the tie-breaker."
Le Flohic was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Garcia Nieto to even the team score at 2-2. Tondi quickly reclaimed a lead for the Lady Flames with a 6-1, 6-0 takedown of Sato.
From there it was all Lady Statesmen. Alvarez-Rubio was a 6-0, 6-0 victor over Yowarsky. Howe moved the visitors to within one point of the team win with a three set win over Grzegrzolka. Grzegrzolka won the opening set 6-4, before Howe turned the tables to win the last two sets, 6-2 and 6-3.
Krista Good dropped her opening set, 6-0, to Stracke. Good fought back to win the second set 6-2 to force a third set where Stracke won by a 6-2 margin.
Friedlander was a 6-3 winner over Hristina Koceva in their first set. Koceva would post scores of 6-3 and 6-2 in the next two sets to win the match.
"Delta State fought hard in singles and deserved to win," admitted Hynes. "Fran played great singles and gave us the platform we needed, but we weren't quite able to hang on. This is the exactly the kind of match that we need to get better. Every Gulf South match is a battle and we will be better for the experience."
