HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Lee University women's tennis team finished its regular season schedule with a 5-4 Gulf South Conference (GSC) victory over Mississippi College at the Charger Tennis Facility on the campus of Alabama Huntsville.
The Lady Flames (16-9, 3-7 GSC) will enter the GSC Tournament as the No. 8 seed and will face No. 1 seed University of West Florida at 2:30 p.m. EDT Thursday. The GSC Tournament will be held April 14-16 at Lagoon Park/O'Connor Tennis Center in Montgomery, Ala.
Mississippi College (8-10, 3-7) swept the doubles competition to hold a 3-0 lead going into singles competition. Brenna Keller and Christa Owen beat Francesca Tondi and Marta Garcia-Nieto, 8-3. Katie Reid and Courtney Schrock were 8-4 winners over Morgan Friedlander and Joanna Grzegrzolka. Karly Matthews and Ashley Ochsenhirt held off Maclain Yowarsky and Laura Beth Hardesty for the 8-6 margin.
Grzegrzolka gave Lee it first team point with a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Reid. Garcia-Nieto outlasted Owen to win their opening set, 7-5, then recorded the second set shutout. Tondi won her first and third sets against Keller by matching 6-4 scores to tie the team score at 3-3.
Ochsenhirt regained the lead with a 6-3, 6-0 defeat of Yowarsky. Friedlander defeated Laura VanHorn 7-5 and 6-4 to take the team match to a final winner-take-all match at No. 4 singles.
Krista Good dropped her opening set to Schrock, 7-6, after losing the tie-breaker 7-2. The junior forced a third set with a 6-3 mark in the second set and finished the individual and team match with a 6-0 shutout in the third set.
"It's not very often you come back from three down after doubles, especially when you are playing your third six-hour match in three days," said Lee head coach Patric Hynes. "I'm very proud of our fight today. That was a huge win for Krista. She lost to the same girl in the same situation last year. Her third set was flawless. Easily the best set she's ever played for Lee."
