BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Lee University women's tennis team's first official year in NCAA Division II came to an end Thursday afternoon with a 5-0 loss to top-seeded and No. 6-ranked University of West Florida in the Gulf South Conference (GSC) Tournament quarterfinals. The No. 8 seed Lady Flames end their season at 16-10.
West Florida (20-5) took a quick lead with a win at No. 3 doubles. Valeria Mantilla and Sarai Flores defeated Joanna Grzegrzolka and Morgan Friedlander, 8-1. Maclain Yowarsky and Laura Beth Hardesty fell 8-3 to Kat Dikosavljevic and Dianna Vlad. Francesca Tondi and Marta Garcia-Nieto lost by the same score at No. 1 doubles to Paula Lopez and Nina Bubelova.
Heather Mixon shut out Friedlander 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles and Vlad took down Yowarsky 6-0, 6-1 to clinch the team victory.
The other four singles matches were left unfinished. Tondi led Dikosavljevic 5-4 in the first set, while Grzegrzolka trailed 46
th-ranked Lopez by the same mark.
Bubelova beat Garcia-Nieto 6-0 in the first set and led 2-1 in the second set. Flores was a 6-2 winner over Krista Good in their opening set and held a 3-0 advantage in the second set.
"West Florida were super tough," said Lee head coach Patric Hynes. "Our girls played at their best, but UWF are just just at a different level. Fran and Asia (Grzegrzolka) played great singles today. Sixteen wins is a great result for this team. They worked hard all year and I'm proud of them."
