CARROLLTON, Ga. – The Lee University women's tennis team won two of the three doubles competitions and the top four singles spots to claim a 6-3 win over West Georgia. The match was the season and Gulf South Conference opener for the Lady Flames (1-0, 1-0 GSC). The Wolves fell to 0-4 (0-2 GSC).
"It's always good to get that first match out of the way," admitted Lee head coach Patric Hynes. "We've had a really long pre-season and the girls did a nice job winning first up. Ana (Webber) and LB (Laura Beth Hardesty) got us off to a great start and everybody played pretty solid singles today."
Webber and Hardesty recorded an 8-3 win over Shelby Brown and Meg Cummings at No. 3 doubles. Francesca Tondi and Marta Garcia-Nieto gave Lee a 2-0 lead with an 8-3 victory over Jordan England and Gabrielle Chanthaphaeng at No. 1 doubles.
West Georgia avoided the shutout with a win at No. 2 doubles. Sara Watson and Sierra Brown outlasted Joanna Grzegrzolka and Krista Good, 8-6.
Tondi opened singles competition with a 6-0, 6-1 win over England. Good pushed Lee's lead to 4-1 after beating Sierra Brown 6-3 and 7-5. Grzegrzolka put the Lady Flames over the top with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles over Chanthaphaeng.
Garcia-Nieto continued the winning streak with a straight-set win at No. 3 singles. The junior beat Sara Watson 6-2, 6-4.
West Georgia needed three sets to win at No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Shelby Brown won her first set 6-4 before Webber forced a third set with a 6-4 win in the second set. Brown would win the match with a 6-2 mark in the final set.
Jamie Bryant and Hardesty also went three sets. Bryant won the opening set 6-4 and Hardesty was a 6-2 winner in the second set. In the third set, Bryant needed a 7-5 mark to post the win.
The Lady Flames open the home portion of their schedule on Mar. 3 against West Florida. The GSC contest is scheduled for 1 p.m.
