BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Lee baseball senior Geremy Walton has been named the Gulf South Conference Player of the Week after helping to guide the Flames to a series victory over No. 15 Catawba College over the weekend at Olympic Field.
Walton hit .636 over the three-game set with two doubles, two RBI and three runs scored. The Atlanta native had three hits in Lee's 6-0 game one victory over the Indians. On Sunday he had three more hits, scored two runs and drove in two as Lee topped Catawba 8-7 to win the rubber match.
"It was a great opportunity to start the season against a really quality opponent, Catawba is ranked 15th in the country and we had a goal to win the series and we were able to accomplish that," said head coach Mark Brew after Sunday's victory. "I'm really proud of our team's response today. Catawba punched us in the mouth early and late, but our team responded on both occasions."
FLAMES SET FOR FIRST ROAD TRIPÂ
Lee will now head on the road for a four-game trip beginning on Thursday at Albany State at 4 p.m. The Flames swept the Rams in a three-game series at Olympic Field last season.Â
After visiting Albany State, Lee will then travel to Florida and take on Sunshine State Conference foe Saint Leo for a three-game weekend series beginning Friday at 6 p.m. The Lions took two of three from West Alabama to start the season last weekend.Â
Brew pointed out that it will not get any easier for his club with their road trip down South this week. "We will be playing four nine-inning games in three days. We will need everyone on our pitching staff to contribute," concluded the Lee skipper.
