Box Score
On a cold and blustery afternoon, the Lee University women's tennis team recorded a 6-1 victory over Shorter University in a Gulf South Conference match at the DeVos Tennis Center.
"We haven't beaten them for a long time, so it felt good to get this one," admitted Lee head coach Patric Hynes. "We talked about the need to start strong with our doubles and the girls did an excellent job to get us a 3-0 lead."
Ana Webber and Laura Beth Hardesty put the Lady Flames (5-1, 2-1 GSC) on the board first with an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles. Francesca Tondi and Marta Garcia-Nieto defeated Aleksandra Durzynski and Julie Rinderknech, 8-5. Joanna Grzegrzolka and Krista Good won by the same score over Melinda Chrun and Monika Gredzinski at No. 2 doubles.
Grzegrzolka downed Rinderknech 6-1 and 6-2 to push Lee's lead to 4-0.
Shorter (2-8, 0-4 GSC) picked up a team point at No. 1 singles. Durzynski claimed a 7-4 tie-breaker to win the opening set 7-6 and doubled Tondi 6-3 in the second set.
Hardesty blanked Westberry 6-0 and 6-0 to clinch the team win. Garcia-Nieto won both her sets against Chrun by the same 6-4 score to supply the final team score. The final two matches were unfinished.
The Lady Flames return to the courts on Saturday at 10 a.m. against North Alabama. The Lions currently hold a 3-0 conference record, but have a match at Shorter on Friday before visiting the DeVos Tennis Center.
