Softball Hosts No. 25 Shorter In Key GSC Series

The Lady Flames will be hoping to celebrate at home plate this weekend against Shorter.


Riding high after a three-game sweep of defending national champion, North Alabama the Lee softball team will return home after a six-game road trip to host a team that is just as hot in the No. 25 Shorter Lady Hawks.

Both teams enter the weekend with identical 8-4 marks in the Gulf South Conference and sit in a tie for second place behind No. 6 Valdosta State (10-2). Lee has won 7 of their last 9 conference games while Shorter is coming off an impressive series victory over the Blazers last weekend.

On Fire In The Circle
Pitching was a big key for the Lady Flames in their sweep of the Lions. Leigh Beatenbough won two games and is now  9-4 with 2.79 ERA. Freshman Taylor Moran had a win and save over the weekend and is now 3-1 with four saves and a 1.50 ERA. The Silverdale Baptist Academy product leads the GSC in saves and is third in ERA.

Lee Swinging the Sticks
The Lady Flames are also getting good production throughout the lineup as they are third in the league with a .319 team batting average. The Lady Flames are second in on-base percentage (.405) trailing only Valdosta State (.426).

Offensively, Lee is led by freshman Abby McKinney. The Ringgold, Ga. native is eighth in hitting in the GSC with a .429 mark and has driven in 24 runs. 

Shorter's Bynum Named Player of the Week
Keep an eye on Ericka Bynum for the Lady Hawks. The senior first baseman was named the GSC Player of the Week last week after hitting safely in each of Shorter's seven games, including four multi-hit games with three doubles and a home run. She also added 10 RBIs for the week to bring her career total to 174, which tied the Shorter career record.

As a team the Lady Hawks our third in the league with 2.76 ERA. Leading the staff is senior Kaeli Clark who boasts a 1.73 ERA, sixth best in the GSC. 

Ice Cream At The Ballpark
In what has become a great tradition at Butler Field our great friends at Mayfield Dairy Farms will once again provide free delicious ice cream sandwiches for all fans in attendance at Sunday's game. The Lady Flames and Lady Hawks will wrap up their three-game series with the first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.
