CLEVELAND, Miss./MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Lee University women's tennis team posted a pair of Gulf South Conference wins on Sunday. The Lady Flames defeated Delta State University 5-2 in the morning and took down Christian Brothers University by the same score late in the evening. Lee is now 7-3 overall and 4-3 in the GSC.
Next on the schedule for the Lady Flames is Tennessee Wesleyan University. The non-conference match is set for Apr. 3 at 2 p.m.
LADY FLAMES 5, CHRISTIAN BROTHERS 2
The Lady Flames swept the doubles competition and two of the four completed singles matches to record their second win of the day.
Joanna Grzegrzolka and Laura Beth Hardesty took down Meg Mattis and Tara McElroy 8-1. Krista Good and Nicole Shennett defeated Melody Mays and Brittany Weathersby 8-6. At No. 1 doubles, Francesca Tondi and Marta Garcia-Nieto needed a tie-breaker score of 7-4 to get the win.
CBU (9-9, 1-5 GSC) earned wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Good beat Mays 6-3 and 6-1 to end their host's run. Tondi overcame a 6-3 first set loss to McElroy to win the next two sets 6-1 and 6-2 to win the No. 1 singles match and score the fifth team point.
"CBU have improved significantly as a program," said Lee head coach Patric Hynes. "It was a tough second match of the day for us and we were pleased to get the win after such a long day."
LADY FLAMES 5, DELTA STATE 2
Lee jumped out to an early 1-0 lead. Laura Beth Hardesty and Joanna Grzegrzolka were 8-0 winners against Sarah Nash and Madison Wages to score the first team point. Alex Howe and Nathalia Sato edged Francesca Tondi and Marta Garcia-Nieto, 8-6. Charlotte Le Flohic and Sara Alvarez-Rubio doubled-up Krista Good and Nicole Shennett, 8-4.
Tondi evened the team score at 2-2 with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Sato at No. 1 singles. The Lady Flames regained the lead with Grzegrzolka's three-set victory over Le Flohic.
Garcia-Nieto used a 7-2 score in a tie-breaker to win her opening set against Howe and claimed the second set 6-3 to give Lee a 4-1 advantage.
Hardesty posted matching 6-2 marks in each set against Nash to earn the fifth team point for Lee. The final two singles matches were left unfinished.
"To come back from 2-1 down after doubles shows we have a huge heart," said Lee head coach Patric Hynes. "These girls are fighters and it is the first time we've beaten them in a while. I am very proud of our team today. Fran, Asia (Grzegrzolka) and Marta all showed great toughness to get the wins we needed."
