ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Lady Flames began their spring break trip with a 9-0 victory over Winona State University Sunday evening to improve their record to 2-1.
"We had to really think our way through the matches tonight," admitted Lee head coach Patric Hynes. "Winona State are well coached and play smart tennis."
Francesca Tondi and Marta Garcia-Nieto posted an 8-4 win over Kaisey Skibba and Rachel Gantz at No. 1 doubles. Krista Good and Joanna Grzegrzolka were 8-3 winners at No. 2 doubles against Justine Daane and Katie Scruggs, while Ana Webber and Laura Beth Hardesty completed the Lee doubles sweep with an 8-4 margin over Kendra Kappes and Tayla Card.
Tondi dropped just one game to Skibba at No. 1 singles and Grzegrzolka secured the team win with a 6-0, 6-2 win against Daane. Garcia-Nieto tallied a 6-1, 6-0 win over Gantz at No. 3 singles.
Ana Webber picked up her first singles win of the season by a 6-2, 6-1 score against Card. Nicole Shennett beat Scruggs 6-2 and 6-4. Good overcame a first set loss (6-3) to win a three-set match with Kappes. Good forced the deciding set with a 6-4 mark in the second set. The senior won the final super set 10-5 to win the match and complete the Lee shutout.
"It was a really good win for Krista," added Hynes. "She was behind the whole night, but still was able to find a way to win."
The Lady Flames are scheduled to play University of the Sciences in Philadelphia Monday at 11:30 a.m.
