MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Lee University women's tennis team was eliminated from the Gulf South Conference Tournament with a 5-0 loss to Valdosta State University Thursday morning at Lagoon Park. The Lady Flames end the season with an 8-7 record.
Valdosta State, ranked No. 10 nationally and seeded second, swept the doubles competition and earned wins at the third and fifth singles spots to record the win and advance to the GSC semifinals. The Lady Blazers improved to 15-5 on the season.
Anja Coksa and Daniela Barta were 8-2 winners over Krista Good and Nicole Shennett at No. 2 doubles. Bea Morales Hernandez and Anke Poncelet defeated Francesca Tondi and Marta Garcia-Nieto 8-3. Laura Ubeda and Estes Widdershoven held off Joanna Grzegrzolka and Laura Beth Hardesty for the 8-5 margin.
Barta recorded a 6-0, 6-0 win over Hardesty to go ahead 4-0. Sabrina Schmidt clinched the match for VSU with a 6-2, 6-0 defeat of Garcia-Nieto. The rest of the singles matches were left unfinished.
