Softball To Participate In Breast Cancer Awareness Day

Freshman Bailey Church is congratulated after hitting a game-winning home run earlier this season.

The Lee softball team has won two straight Gulf South Conference series and will look to make it three straight as it welcomes longtime rival Union University to Butler Field this weekend.

The Lady Flames have used pitching and timely hitting to post a 26-11 mark and 13-8 record in league play heading into the final month of the regular season. The Lady Bulldogs stormed out of the gate with an impressive 11-5 mark to start their year but have struggled of late dropping four straight contests overall. While the Lady Flames sit in a tie for third, Union is on the outside looking in to clinch a spot in the GSC Tournament as it is three games back of eighth place West Georgia with 12 league games remaining.

Faith.Fight.Frost
On Saturday Lee will join with several other softball programs from around the country in honoring Missy Frost, Head Softball Coach for the University of Indianapolis along with the 1 out of every 8 women who are diagnosed with Breast Cancer. April 8 is Breast Cancer Awareness Day and a total of 41 teams hailing from 16 states and 14 different athletic conferences will be wearing the honoring slogan "Faith.Fight.Frost." as each school continues to show its support for Coach Frost and her ongoing battle with Breast Cancer.

Beatenbough, Moran Create Powerful 1-2 Punch
The combination of veteran junior Leigh Beatenbough and freshman Phenom Taylor Moran has worked wonders for head coach Emily Russell. Beatenbough is 12-4 with a 2.79 ERA. She ranks fifth in the conference in wins and 11th in ERA. Moran is 8-3 with a league leading 1.15 ERA and five saves. As a team the Lady Flames are fourth in the GSC in ERA at 3.13

Offensively sophomore Stevie Baird has provided a spark from the leadoff spot as she is fourth in the conference with 12 doubles. Freshman Abby McKinney leads the team with a .374 average and 39 RBI.

Scott, Morris Lead Union Offense
Ashley Scott is a player to watch for the Lady Bulldogs. She is sixth in the GSC with a .421 average and is slugging .702 with 10 doubles, five triples and four home runs. Morris follows hitting at a .383 mark with a team-leading seven homers.

GSC Race Heating Up
In what always proves to be one of the most balanced conferences in all of NCAA D2 the GSC again looks to come down to the wire with nine teams separated by just six games. No. 11 Valdosta State and No. 22 Alabama Huntsville are tied for first at 15-6. West Florida, winners of 20 straight games, are tied with Mississippi College at 14-7. The Lady Flames and North Alabama fall in next at 13-8 while Shorter sits at 10-11 followed by West Georgia and West Alabama at 9-12 and tied for the eighth and final spot in the GSC Tournament with 12 league games remaining.

Daddy/Daughter Day
On Sunday, the Lady Flames will host the first annual Daddy/Daughter Day. Those who have registered will receive a t-shirt and ticket for the cookout which will begin at 1:30 p.m. prior to the 2:00 p.m. first pitch. After the game all dads and daughters are invited onto the field to play some catch.
