YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – The Lee University women's tennis team traveled to the North Georgia mountains to participate in the Enchanted Valley Showdown this past weekend. The event was hosted by Young Harris College at the Bob & Gayle Nichols Tennis Complex.
"We got what we came for, which was match experience for everyone.," said Lee head coach Patric Hynes. "We were able to try out some different combinations in doubles and saw some good things. Both teams finished the tournament well and we will go back to work and prepare for our last tournament in two weeks."
The Lady Flames were 1-8 in doubles competition and combined for an 8-10 record in singles action. Micaela Belen Maiz and Sierra Donaldson went 1-2 with a 6-4 win over Juana Zambrano and MaryWynn Brannon of Brenau University.
Lauren Good and Hayden Smith fell 6-2 to Brenau's Sally Brannon and Valentina Pabon. Lisa Kirr and Mirjana Ragastovac dropped two matches, while Lauren Trammell and Larissa Wieser went 0-3.
In singles competition, Kirr and Maiz each tallied 2-1 records. Kirr lost her opening match 6-1, 7-5 to Ana Carla Resende of Carson-Newman. She rebounded to beat Montevallo's Hartlohner 6-3, 6-1 and Young Harris' Joselyne Chapui 6-1, 6-4. Maiz beat Summer Reeves of Carson-Newman 7-5 and 6-1 before outlasting Montevallo's Mireia Turro 6-1, 3-6, 10-4. Maiz's hopes of an unbeaten weekend ended with a three-set loss to Jing Dong of Young Harris. Maiz won the first set 6-4, but Dong claimed the next two sets 6-3 and 10-7.
Smith was beaten 6-0, 6-3 by Carson-Newman's Maria Ulloa in her first match. She then beat Montevallo's Courtney Piltaver and Young Harris' Catarina Marcko Ferreira in straight sets to finish the weekend 2-1.
Donaldson split her two singles matches and Trammell completed the weekend 1-2. Ragastovic was 0-2, while Lauren Good and Wieser lost their lone singles matches.
The Lady Flames are scheduled to travel to the Eagle Invitational the weekend of October 22-23. The two-day competition will be held at Tyson Park in Knoxville, Tenn.
