Kirr, Maiz Earn All-GSC Second Team Honors; Lady Flames Prepare For GSC Championships

2021 GSC WOMEN'S TENNIS ALL-GSC TEAM

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Gulf South Conference released its 2021 Women's Tennis All-Conference Awards Wednesday afternoon, the day before the 2021 GSC Championships are set to begin. Lisa Kirr and Micaela Belen Maiz were named All-GSC Second Team.

Kirr enters the postseason with an overall record of 9-5 and a conference mark of 5-5. She is 5-4 in No. 1 singles matches and 4-1 at the No. 2 position. She is currently on a two-match win streak.

Maiz was 7-7 overall and 5-5 in GSC competition. She was 1-4 at No. 1 singles and was 6-3 in the second spot.

"Lisa and Mica add so much to our women's program and I'm proud of them both," said Lee head coach Patric Hynes. "They continually push themselves and their teammates in practice. Their results are reflections of their hard work and this award is a nice recognition of that."

The Lady Flames (9-5) enter the GSC Tennis Championships as the No. 6 seed and will matchup with No. 3 seed Mississippi College on Thursday at 11 a.m. EDT. Mississippi College enters with an 8-6 record.

"We just played them on Thursday at their place and it was a tough match. I'm sure that it will be the same again this week," added Hynes.

In the previous meeting, the Lady Flames came away with a 5-2 victory. After being swept in the doubles competition, Lee claimed five of the six singles matches to come away with the win.

Carley Sickinger was a 6-0, 7-6 (7-4) winner at No. 4 singles and Maiz won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 singles to give the Lady Flames a 2-1 lead. Following a three set win by the Choctaws' Fernanda Cota at No. 3 singles, Kirr gave Lee the lead for good with a three-set win of her own over Paulina Cota. Hayden Smith won 6-1, 6-1; and Sierra Donaldson posted a 7-6 (7-5), 6-0 win at No. 5 singles to finalize the team score.

With a win on Thursday, the Lady Flames would advance to face either No. 2 seed West Florida or No. 7 seed Christian Brothers Friday morning.

"I'm just excited to get down to Montgomery and play. At the start of the fall semester we were all unsure if things were going to happen this year, so we are thankful for the opportunity to compete and represent Lee. Thanks again to the hard work of our administration at Lee who worked so hard to make sure we were able to play this year and have these opportunities. Hopefully we can go down and show our gratitude with our effort and bring home some good results," Hynes concluded.
