Hot-Shooting No. 3 Union Hands Lee 79-66 Defeat

Senior Camryn Grant goes up for a layup in Saturday's battle with Union.
Box Score Union University turned back a late fourth quarter rally by the Lee women and remained unbeaten in Gulf South Conference basketball play (18-0) and improved to 23-2 overall with a 79-66 victory over the Lady Flames inside Walker Arena on Saturday afternoon.

The loss dropped the Lady Flames to 22-6 overall and 15-5 (GSC). Playoff action begins on Tuesday (6 p.m.). The third-place finish will pit Lee against Mississippi College. A victory would send the Lady Flames onto Sanford University for semifinal and final play in the GSC Championship.

Haley Schubert led the Lady Flames with 20 points, and she was also the top rebounder with seven. Julia Duncan came on strong in the second half and finished with 15 points. She made 5-of-8 shots from the field and 4-of-6 free throws. Cam Grant and Hannah Garrett followed with nine points each. Grant also had four rebounds as the Lady Flames lost the battle of the boards 34-30.

Overall, Lee shot 39% from the field, 27% from 3-point range and made 16-of-21 free throws. The visiting Lady Bulldogs were on fire from the beginning of the contest and jumped out to a 22-12 lead at the end of the first quarter and never trailed. They shot 52% for the game and made 8-of-13 triples (62%) and canned 19-of-29 freebies.

"This is the best club I have seen Union have," commented Lee coach Marty Rowe after the contest. "They have four really good guards and an outstanding post player down low. It is easy to see why they were able to go undefeated in a really tough conference."

It was Senior afternoon and the Lady Flames honored Halle Hughes, Camryn Grant, Lynnsey Keener, Micah Black and Angela Robson. "These outstanding young ladies have meant so much to our program and I can't say enough good things about them," said Coach Rowe. "Day in and day out they come ready to do what it takes to make our program better."
