Lady Flames Swing Past Pioneers in Game One, Drop Pitcher's Duel in Game Two

Nyah Vogel pitched 7.2 innings and gave up just two runs in game two at Tusculum.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Lee softball team settled for a doubleheader split at Tusculum on Tuesday. The Lady Flames rolled to a 12-7 game one victory before dropping a 2-1 extra inning battle in game two.

The Lady Flames jumped on the Pioneers early in game one with three runs in the first as Taylor De Adder hit a two-run double and Sidney Lee singled up the middle to score a run.

After Tusculum answered with three runs of its own, the Lady Flames put another three spot on the board. Lee broke things open up with a five-run fourth led by a three-run triple off the bat of Shelby Cole.

Madison Barnett tossed a complete game to move to 9-9 on the year. She gave up seven runs on eight hits but only two runs were earned. She struck out six and walked two.

Katelynn Hodges led the Pioneers with a pair of hits and three RBI. Suits also tallied two hits and scored twice.

Bush started (0-1) and failed to record an out before beginning lifted for Reynolds who worked seven innings in relief and allowed nine runs, seven earned on 13 hits.

GAME 2 LEE 1 TU 2
After combining for 19 runs in game one it was an old-fashioned pitcher's duel in the nightcap as Tusculum outlasted Lee, 2-1 in eight innings to split the doubleheader.

After neither team scored in seven innings the Lady Flames finally broke the scoreless tie as Sidney Lee drew a bases loaded walk. The Pioneers worked out of the jam and kept it at a one run game going into the bottom of the eighth.

Hayley Lazo tied things up with a double down the left field line. That set the stage for Chloe Freischmidt's game-winning sacrifice fly.

Nyah Vogel (14-8) was the tough-luck loser. She allowed just three hits and two runs (one earned), in 7.2 innings. She walked five a struck out a pair.

Emily Sappington started and worked four shutout innings. She yielded just three hits and struck out four. Cavanaugh (11-5) tossed the final four innings to earn the victory. She allowed one unearned run on three hits and struck out five.

"Today was an opportunity to work on making better adjustments. We saw a lot of different pitching today and can learn from today moving into the weekend. It's always tough to sweep on the road. We pushed it to extras and were one play away from getting out of there with two. Nyah pitched well enough to win for sure and I know we will be better because of these games," said Lee head coach Emily Russell.

Lee is now 24-18 on the year while Tusculum sits at 24-19. The Lady Flames are now 7-2 over their last nine contests with the Pioneers.

The Lady Flames will wrap up the regular season with two Gulf South Conference three-game weekend series. Lee will travel to Montevallo for a crucial three-game set with tournament seeding implications. The series starts on Friday with a single game at 3 p.m.
