Lee will travel to Oxford, Alabama (Choccolocco Park) to open play in the Gulf South Baseball Championship on Friday at 2:30. The seventh-seeded Flames will be pitted against second-seeded Montevallo in the eight- team double-elimination tournament.
West Florida earned the top spot in the final GSC standings, followed by Montevallo, Alabama Huntsville, Valdosta State, West Georgia, Shorter, Lee and Delta State. Â
Lee finished the regular season at 26-23 overall and 15-15 in GSC play. The Falcons enter the tournament at 37-12, 21-9. However, the Flames won two games (8-7, 7-6) to take a three-game series with visiting Montevallo back on April 7.
Friday will be a battle between the two top homerun-hitting teams in the GSC. The Flames have slugged 77 and the Falcons 70, but Montevallo's Sam Kuchinski has the individual long-ball lead with 16. He is also best in the GSC with a .439 batting average and 69 runs batted in.
Freshman Malachi Cloud, who blasted the dramatic walk-off homerun in Lee's second-game win against the Falcons, continues his hitting surge and has moved up to second at .432 in the GSC batting average standings. He also has 10 homers. Cam Suto is hitting .370 with 12 dingers, 14 doubles and 54 RBI.
Brandon Daniels and Dylan Standifer have 13 homeruns each for the Flames. Sandifer paces the club in hits 62, has knocked in 49 runs and scored a team-leading 52 runs. Jack Nedrow enters the event with a 5-2 pitching record while JJ Pease owns a 7-1 mark for Montevallo.
The GSC Tournament is always one of the most difficult challenges, but this year's field looks really challenging for all the teams," remarked coach Mark Brew as he leads his defending tournament champions into the event.
"We have not played our best baseball yet this year, and we are expecting to come out and play well this week. We have several players who can draw on experiences from the last two years in Oxford and will share that with the new players. It is going to be an exciting week."Â
