Box Score 2 CARROLLTON, Ga. It took two late comebacks, but the Lee University softball team swept the University of West Georgia 15-10 and 13-12 on Saturday. With the two wins, the Lady Flames improved to 9-4 overall and 5-3 in Gulf South Conference play. In game one, the Lady Flames scored 11 runs in the sixth and seventh innings to snag a win. In game two, Lee had to scramble after giving up a double-digit lead but held on to win.
GAME 1
The Lady Flames struck first when Hailey Simco scored on a wild pitch in the first inning. In the second, UWG took the lead with a three-run home run. The Wolves added to the lead in the third with a double that drove in two runs to go up 5-3.
Marquila Howell brought in two runs in the fourth with a triple. UWG added their own run in the fourth. Alexa Scalzo continues to hit well as she had a solo home run in the fifth. UWG had two more runs in the fifth to lead the game 8-4.
The sixth inning the Lady Flames took advantage of the pitching from the Wolves. Shelby Cole got the scoring started when she was walked with the bases loaded. Scalzo was then walked as well to bring in another run. Javaria Smith then cleared the bases with a double to give Lee the lead. Bella Galloway brought in the final run of the inning with a triple. UWG tied the game at 10-10 in the bottom half of the sixth with a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch.
In the final inning, the Lady Flames scored five more runs to seal the win. Scalzo drove in a run and then Simco hit a three-run home run to finish the game off at 15-10.
Scalzo, Simco, and Smith all finished the game with three RBI while Galloway had three hits. Abigail Welbaum got the win in relief going four innings while giving up five runs on nine hits and striking out one. Olivia Tyson got the start going three innings giving up five runs on four hits and striking out two.
GAME 2
The Lady Flames got going quickly in the second game of the double header scoring the first 11 runs of the game. Galloway and Laney Harris each drove in runs in the first inning for Lee. Kylie Bohl had her first home run of the game in the third bringing in three runs. The fourth had three more runs as Bohl, Smith, and Annalynn Ormbsy all brought runs to home plate in the fourth.
The fifth inning had RBI's from Scalzo, Galloway, and Alyson Jarvi to give the 11-0 lead to the Lady Flames. Then in the bottom of the fifth it fell apart for the Lady Flames as 12 runs came across. Three early errors helped allow multiple runs come across, and UWG also used ten hits to drive the runs home.
Simco hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth to tie the game, and then in the top of the seventh, Bohl hit her second home run of the game to give Lee the win.
Bohl was 2-for-2 from the plate and had three RBI and two runs scored in the win. Smith scored four runs as well. Eight different Lady Flames drove runs in and six different Lady Flames scored.
Olivia Tyson earned her fifth win going two and one-third innings and striking out three while only giving up one hit. Alaina Watson went four and two-thirds innings giving up 12 runs with only eight earned on ten hits.
The Lady Flames will play the third and final game of the series with UWG at 11 AM on Sunday in Carrollton.
Coach Emily Russell's Thoughts:
"We overcame adversity and responded well. We created the adversity in game two but we grew.
"Alaina threw four perfect innings and it got away from us in the 5th. We are talking about growing and showing up with consistency. I think we were able to do that well tonight."
"We had some great clutch hits in big moments. I'm looking forward to another big game tomorrow."
